Mark was an invited speaker at the international conference on ‘Nature and Governance’ in Berlin, coinciding with the launch of a new European project EU BON. He presented a seminar at the CSIC-National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid, Spain.


January 2013

Mark had several interviews on New Zealand radio, BBC and other media outlets about his paper in published in Science this month. He was an invited Chair at the Environmental Sciences Association of Ireland annual colloquium in Galway, and organisation he established some 20 years ago.

Mark attended the Group on Earth Observation Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON) ‘all-hands’ workshop in Asilomar, California, and accepted an invitation to co-chair the Marine Ecosystems Working Group. He also attended the European Marine Observation Data Network (EMODNET) workshop in Ostend Belgium.

October 2012

Shyama Pagad attended the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of the Parties COP 11 in India. The IUCN / Invasive Species Specialist Group signed an agreement with the Secretariat of the CBD at the launch of the Global Invasive Alien Species Information Partnership formally acknowledging ISSG support for the work of the CBD on invasive species.

Mark Costello attended the annual meeting of the Scientific Committee on Ocean Research (SCOR) in Halifax, Canada; and Boston University. He accepted an invitation to co-Chair the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Biodiversity Observation Network (BON) marine working group.

Zhi-Qiang Zhang participated in the TDWG 2012 Annual Conference 22-26 Oct 2012 in Beijing, China. The primary theme of TDWG 2012 was "Toward an International Infrastructure for Biodiversity Information". He organized a plenary symposium: “Biodiversity database and journal interface in the e-publication era".

Mark Costello was elected Vice-Chair of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility Science Committee at the Governing Board meeting in Lillehammer, Norway. He visited colleagues at the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford; World Conservation Monitoring Centre, BirdLife International, Google Research, and International Union for Nature Conservation offices in Cambridge; Trinity College Dublin; and Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) in Ostend.

Shyama Pagad attended the World Conservation Congress of the International Union for Conservation of Nature representing the Invasive Species Specialist Group ISSG. The ISSG hosted two events one on the ongoing operational linkages between the Global Invasive Species database and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the other on the development of Management Guidelines on the management of invasive species in Protected Areas; ISSG also presented a poster on the information services of the group

Mark Costello accepted an invitation to join the Advisory Board of the new journal BioInvasions Records, the International Journal of Applied Research on Biological Invasions. He attended the GBIF Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark; was an invited speaker and session chair at the General Assembly of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) held in Suzhou, China, where he represented the International Association of Biological Oceanography (IABO); and visited the Institute of Oceanology in Qingdao, China, to plan the hosting of the World Conference on Marine Biodiversity there in 2014.


June 2012

Eliot Crafton (University of California at Davis) joined the group on an NSF Scholarship to study marine invasive species in New Zealand.

Alison Birmingham (Trinity College, University of Dublin) joined the group to model the relationships of parasite burdens on their hosts.

Mark Costello was an invited participant at the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems workshop held by the IUCN Commissions on Species Survival and Ecosystem Management at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions, University of Melbourne, Australia.

Cherrys Abrigo started her MSc project on methods for assessing connectivity between Marine Reserves, using speciesinventories, species ranges, current dispersal models and distance between reserves in New Zealand.

Marcella Garcia Carrillo started her MSc project on a comparison of the taxonomic composition, richness and endemicity between marine species inventories for major world regions.

Mark Costello attended the Annual meeting of the Scientific Committee on Ocean Research; the workshop of marine editors of the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) in Aberdeen Scotland; and was a keynote plenary speaker at the 2nd World Conference on Marine Biodiversity in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Shyama Pagad attended the Informatics Expert Meeting on Invasive Alien Species in Copenhagen, Denmark, hosted by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

Shyama Pagad attended the SPREP (Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme) annual meeting in Apia Samoa. She presented the newly developed Island Biodiversity and Invasive Species Database (IBIS) at a side event jointly hosted by SPREP and the ISSG.

Mark Costello convened a symposium on marine biodiversity at the 22nd Asia Pacific Science Congress held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, followed by an open forum on potential collaboration in the Asia-Pacific region; gave seminars at James Cook University and the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences (AIMS).
