Host: Centre for Biodiversity and Biosecurity

Katie O’Reilly
University of Portland

Katie is a visiting Fulbright Scholar in Todd Dennis’ lab, studying movement patterns and hormones in little blue penguins (Eudyptula minor) with Ph.D. student Jingjing Zhang. Katie has been studying hormones and behavior in shorebirds, seabirds, and passerines for 25 years.
In this seminar she will highlight her collaborative work on seabirds including Leach’s storm-petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa), black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), and thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia). Do age and experience influence an individual’s reaction to stressful events? How do environmental conditions impact an individual’s response to stress? Comparing baseline and capture stress-induced plasma levels of corticosterone is a simple method to gain insight and begin to answer these questions.
