Host: Joint Graduate School in Plant and Food Science

Fascination of Plants Day is an international initiative to bring to the attention of the general public the importance of plants to our environment and economy. To recognise Fascination of Plants Day the Joint Graduate School for Plant and Food Science, is hosting an event for high school students, teachers, parents and the general public to find out more about the amazing world of plants.

Programme:
New Zealand Native Plants (30 mins):
Guided tours of NZ native plants in Old Government House grounds. Times: 1.00, 2.15, 3.30

Talks (10-15 mins):
1.30pm Orchid tricks and tactics: Australian and NZ orchids and their pollinators
2.00pm Plants from Hawaiki to Aotearoa: Adaptation of Eastern Polynesian ancestors of Maori to New Zealand’s Climate
2.30pm Psa: a modern day bubonic plague on kiwifruit
3.00pm What can plant biotechnology do for you?

Interactive displays include: Freaky fruit; Fascinating Fungi; Plant virus villains; Eating plant DNA; Growing complete plants from single cells; Vanilla: the posh spice; (plus a quiz, with prizes).
